LONDON, April 13 () -- International ratings agency Standard & Poor's (S&P) on Friday reaffirmed its top triple-A credit rating for Britain, saying British economy is "wealthy, open and diversified."The ratings agency also confirmed a stable outlook for Britain, while its two counterparts Moody's and Fitch had earlier placed Britain's top rating on "negative outlook," warning that it could be downgraded. The other two ratings agencies were concerned about the growth prospects and public debt levels of Britain, whose economy contracted by 0.2 percent in the last quarter of 2011, and is expected to just avoid a further contraction for the first three months of this year."In our view, the UK has a wealthy, open, and diversified economy, supported by a well-established political system and macroeconomic policy framework, which can react quickly to economic challenges," S&P said in a statement.S&P expected the British government to stick to fiscal austerity plans and forecast its net debt burden to peak in 2013 at about 87 percent of GDP.
SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, April 27 () -- A U.S. based global rights watchdog Human Rights Watch (HRW) has urged UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, currently on a visit to India to press the Indian government to address serious human rights violations, such as extrajudicial killings, abuses in conflict areas, and widespread torture."India has a dynamic democracy, but UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon should not gloss over the serious domestic violations and routine impunity that affect millions of Indians, and hold back the country's development," said Meenakshi Ganguly, South Asia director at Human Rights Watch."Ban would do a great disservice to the Indian people if he were to only talk about regional and global issues."The rights body says the Indian government has failed to hold soldiers and police officers who are responsible for abuses to account. Ban Ki-moon, accompanied by his wife Ban Soon-taek and advisers, is on a three-day official visit to India during which he is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. He arrived in New Delhi Thursday evening.Ban has met Indian Health Minister and is likely to meet other Indian ministers, top government officials and key business leaders during his sojourn.India's official broadcaster All India Radio (AIR) Friday reported he will be conferred an honorary doctorate by Jamia Millia Islamia University Friday.HRW said Ban should in particular press the Indian government to repeal the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) and call for the repeal of archaic sedition laws that have been used to silence peaceful dissent."AFSPA provides effective immunity to troopers responsible for serious human rights violations and has led to widespread abuses in Indian-controlled Kashmir and in the northeastern Indian states where it remains in force," a HRW statement said.
