KHARTOUM, June 18 () -- Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir on Monday announced a package of measures, including government restructuring and fuel subsidies removal, to tackle the economic plight.Al-Bashir made the announcement at a parliamentary session, during which he vowed to chop government posts at the levels of presidency, legislative body and ministries as part of the efforts to streamline the administration.The announced measures also include curtailing senior officials ' privileges, reining in general expenditure, and privatizing the government-owned companies.Al-Bashir went on to declare a decision to gradually remove the government subsidies to the fuel, saying that the money failed to benefit the low-income population but rather went to the rich people as well as some institutions and organizations.The Sudanese economy has been deteriorating after the separation of South Sudan, which caused the country to lose three quarters of its oil wealth.Following the separation of the south, the deficit in Sudan's general budget amounted to 4.2 billion SDGs (about 1.6 billion U.S. dollars), which caused the International Monetary Fund to urge the government to deal with the problem.Also, Sudan's annual inflation rate is running appallingly high, hitting 28.6 percent in April and 30.4 percent May.
